One of the frequently asked questions regarding our multi-grade classroom, is how we present subjects like Social Studies and Science to two different grade levels. Presently in Science we are studying The Pond. So the lesson is presented with visuals and some hands-on. Then the student completes an activity at his (her) given grade level, which demonstrates an understanding of the lesson just presented.
Recently in Social Studies we completed a unit on Colonial America. We were able to use an interactive website from Colonial Williamsburg in which the students were able to identify people of different classes and dress them appropriately.
Presently we are studying states of the southeast region and have recently viewed a 30 minute video on My America. Now each kindergarten and 1st grade student is drawing the state of his (her) choice, and identifying special sites and activities.
